The major goal of our research program will be to develop a slurry biotreatment process for soil contaminated with PCP, PAHs, and creosote. The estimation I cost of soil bioremediation is a part of our overall research program to treat soil in slurry bioreators. This analysis will estimate the costs for remediating three contaminated soil volumes (600 m3, 6000 m3, and 12000 m3).
Because site-specific engineering designs that are beyond the scope of this project will be required, some conditions will be assumed to simplify site-specific complexities. The estimation will be conducted based upon a flow sheet that will include the following: site preparation, excavation, screening of contaminated soil, washing of coarse particles, slurry bioreactor, disposal of treated soil, demobilization activities, and consumable material (chemicals, water, and power) costs. Different process choices will be considered in the analysis, such as different dewatering methods, etc. The cost will be eventually calculated on unit soil volume basis and comparisons will be made between different soil volumes to be treated. The result of this study will be useful to assess the potential value for application of this treatment process at selected sites where such contamination exist. Key words: cost analysis, slurry bioreactor, wood treatment chemicals
