MECHANICAL DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN OF A SOIL SLURRY REACTOR FOR BIOREMEDIATION

M. Ferraro, G.W. Preckshot, S.K. Banerji, and R. Bajpai, University of Missouri-Columbia, Columbia, MO 65211 Slurry bioreactors for soil restoration have received attention due to faster rates of bioremediation compared to competitive biotechnologies. However, design and scale-up of these bioreactors from small-scale laboratory experiments is not reliable due to the lack of appropriate data.

As a result, a pilot scale (350 - 5001 working volume) slurry bioreactor has been fabricated. This presentation will deal with mechanical design and fabrication of the pilot plant bioreactor. Power requirements for agitation and mixing of soil slurries with two different impellers and under different aeration rates will be presented and discussed in the light of rheology of the soil slurries

Key words: soil restoration, bioremediation, slurry bioreactor, aeration
